A residential wood wheelchair ramp is the cheaper option on day one, and that's a real advantage worth taking seriously. The comparison that actually decides it, though, isn't the day you build it — it's year three, when you find out what the material is like to live with through Kentucky winters and whether you can still get rid of it easily.
Here's the honest version of both sides. We rent aluminum systems, so weigh the conclusion accordingly — but the facts below hold either way.
What a wood ramp costs up front
Pressure-treated materials commonly run $20 to $40 per linear foot before tools, concrete and fasteners. For a three-step entrance needing about 21 feet, that's several hundred dollars in lumber, plus footings.
If the labor is free — you or a family member building it — that's genuinely hard to beat on raw cost for a permanent need. Nobody should pretend otherwise. The full process is in our guide to building a wheelchair ramp.

Year one versus year three
A new wood ramp is solid, looks decent, and does the job. The changes come gradually enough that nobody notices them happening.
Treated lumber moves as it dries. Boards cup and twist, fasteners work loose, and the deck surface stops being flat. Footings settle unevenly, especially where drainage runs along the side of a house, and that shows up as cross slope — the side-to-side tilt that steers a chair toward one edge the whole way up. The ADA limit is 1:48, roughly a quarter inch of fall per foot of width, and a settled footing clears that easily.
Splinters arrive around the same time, which matters more than it sounds if someone transfers using their hands or grips the rail hard.
Traction: wet leaves, frost and ice
This is the difference people underestimate most. Bare treated wood is slippery wet, and it holds ice rather than shedding it.
A ramp is the one surface on the property where slipping is least acceptable, and it's used in exactly the conditions that make wood worst — early morning frost, wet leaves in November, freezing rain. Grip tape, grit-additive paint and fastened mesh all work, and all of them wear through where the wheels track. That's an annual job, not a one-time one.
Aluminum systems use a slip-resistant walking surface with an open or textured deck that sheds water instead of holding it, so ice has less to grip. It isn't magic in an ice storm, but it's a meaningfully better starting point.
The upkeep nobody budgets for
A wood ramp is a deck, and it needs what a deck needs:
- Sealing or staining every year or two, or the boards check and grey
- Re-applying traction surfacing as it wears
- Tightening fasteners that back out as the lumber moves
- Re-leveling or shimming as footings settle
- Replacing individual boards that split or rot
None of it is hard. All of it lands on whoever is already handling everything else — usually the same family member who's coordinating appointments and medication. That's the real cost, and it doesn't appear on any materials list.
What happens when you don't need it anymore
This is where the two materials genuinely diverge, and it's the part almost nobody thinks about while they're building.
Removing a wood ramp is demolition. Concrete footings come out of the ground, the structure gets cut apart and hauled to the dump, and wherever it attached to the house needs patching and paint. It's a day of work and a disposal fee, and it can leave the front of the house looking worse than before the ramp existed.
A modular aluminum system comes apart the same way it went together. It's freestanding — resting on its own supports, nothing drilled or bolted into the house — so removal is unbolting sections and loading them on a truck. The entrance looks exactly as it did before. When we remove a rental, that's a $100 visit and the porch goes back to normal.
Where wood still wins
Three situations where we'd tell you to build:
The need is permanent and long-term. Someone's aging in place in a house they'll be in for fifteen years. Amortized over that, materials plus your own labor beats any rental, and appearance can be matched to the house in a way an aluminum system can't.
The layout is genuinely unusual. An entrance that needs to thread around a bay window, wrap two corners, or tie into an existing deck at an odd height is sometimes easier to solve with custom framing.
Appearance is the deciding factor and the budget exists. A wood ramp built to match existing deck railing can read as part of the house rather than as equipment. For some families that matters a great deal, and it's a legitimate reason.

Short-term needs around Owensboro
